Field Hockey Basics for New Parents

Field hockey is played on a field, not on ice

Field hockey uses curved sticks, a hard ball, goals, field markings, and running shoes or turf shoes instead of skates, a puck, and rink boards.

This guide is about outdoor field hockey. It should not be read as ice hockey rules, because field hockey has different equipment, fouls, restarts, player spacing, and goalie rules.

Teams move the ball with stick skills and passing

Players try to control, pass, dribble, and shoot the ball toward the opponent's goal while defenders mark space and try to win the ball safely.

Parents can start by watching the ball, then widen their view to see passing angles, open space, and how quickly players reset after a whistle.

Goals usually come from inside the shooting circle

In many field hockey rule sets, an attacking player must legally play the ball from inside the shooting circle for a goal to count.

This is one of the biggest parent-confusing rules. A hard shot from outside the circle may look exciting but may not count unless it meets the local scoring rule.

Free hits and sideline restarts organize play

After many whistles, the awarded team takes a free hit, self-start, or hit-in from the sideline depending on the call and local youth rules.

Restarts may be slowed down for teaching at younger ages. Look for the official's direction and where the ball is placed before play resumes.

Safe stick use matters every play

Field hockey involves sticks near feet, shins, and other players, so officials watch for dangerous swings, raised balls, crowding, and unsafe challenges.

Youth rules often emphasize safe spacing and controlled stick work. Coaches should teach how to play the ball without swinging through other players.
